President, Essence Healthcare
Umar Farooq serves as President of Essence Healthcare, the wholly owned health plan of Lumeris. Umar’s responsibilities include directing the health plan’s short- and long-range strategic plans, managing P&L, driving national scalability for growth, and delivering an industry leading experience for all our members, providers and stakeholders. Essence Healthcare is one of the nation’s highest-performing government-sponsored health plans, designed as a provider-led partnership that creates a more cost-effective healthcare financing and delivery model. Umar is charged with advancing this imperative to meet the needs of the communities Lumeris serves. Umar brings extensive operating experience in the development and formation of Provider Sponsored Health Plans (PSHP) and provider-aligned managed care products.
Prior to joining Lumeris, Umar was General Manager and Market President for Commonwealth Care Alliance (CCA) of Boston, Massachusetts where he held P&L responsibility for the $2B payer/provider managed care plan in Boston. At CCA, Mr. Farooq was responsible for market and business line performance of Medicare and Medicaid health plans, relationships with government officials, provider groups, and other key strategic partners that drive growth and expansion Umar has also served as a Vice President at Centene Corporation, where he was responsible for Managed Health Services Wisconsin (MHS) health plan’s provider strategy, operations, Medicare bid and strategic planning efforts. In his last tour, he assisted Centene’s 2020 Transformation efforts which included Marketplace (Ambetter) Network & Product strategy.
Mr. Farooq is active in his community, having served on the Columbus Indiana Chamber of Commerce’s Board (Past Chair), Our Hospice (Board Member), and participates as a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association. Mr. Farooq holds a B.S in Finance and M.B.A from Indiana University.
